We learn about home and village life in the early twentieth century when entertainment centred around friends and church and societies. We find out about the beginnings of the now world famous golf course and of the family which brought Royalty to the village. Sympathetically researched by local author and historian, Marjorie Sargeant, this book gives a nostalgic insight into an era which has passed.
Echoes of Woodhall Spa: Woodhall and War
By Marjorie Sargeant
The book is priced at £10.00 and can be obtained from the Museum or selected local retailers. Alternatively, buy now online for £11.25 which includes UK post and packaging.
Description
In this engrossing book some fifty people tell of their lives in twentieth century Woodhall Spa.
There are several recollections of wartime – rationing; soldiers billeted everywhere; ammunition heavily guarded in the woods; the sadness of families housing airmen who went on missions from which they did not return; the secret and momentous visit from King George V1; the Secret Resistance in the village, known only to the family in the property concerned; and many vivid memories of the night the bombs dropped in the centre of the village.
However, it is perhaps the feeling of an age gone by which is so evocative – the reliance on the railway; shoes which arrived with the bus driver from Horncastle if the needed size was not available in the village; the Dad`s Army antics of the Fire Watchers; the pulling together to raise money for an ambulance; the lady chimney sweep on her bicycle; another lady who was secretary to Winston Churchill; village cricket; regular deliveries of bread and milk; characters and sheer hard work within a community.
The memories are skilfully arranged in a story – like sequence, easy to read and eminently enjoyable.
Woodhall Spa and the World: 1885 – 1890 in the News
By Marjorie Sargeant
The book is priced at £9.00 and can be obtained from the Museum or selected local retailers. Alternatively, buy now online for £10.25 which includes UK post and packaging.
Description
This book is composed of excepts from five years of “The Horncastle News and South Lindsey Advertiser,” from its first publication in September 1885, price one penny.
The author has cleverly mixed local, national and international news; there are both serious and light-hearted items; some things are the same and others very different and because it is written in the present tense we feel we are there. So… “The smallpox epidemic in Grimsby is causing a regular scare”…. “A gentleman carried by loyal friends to the Baths in Woodhall Spa is now, within a week, able to dance merrily”… “A bride and entourage waited in vain for the groom in Huntingdon and when informed he said “Lor, I thought it was next week”….”Neither gentleman in a duel with pistols in France was hurt and afterwards they complimented each other”…”Mr. Stanley has not been heard of for some time in the great African continent where it is believed he has penetrated further than any white man”…” Mr Eiffel has drawn up a long description of his tower”….”997 persons were killed on the railways in England in 1885″…” “the Jubilee Day of Her Majesty was celebrated by the loyal and humble inhabitants of Horncastle. At 4 a.m. a party of buglers perambulated the town, a commencement somewhat unwelcome in some households”…”Another gruesome murder in Whitechapel – who is this Ripper?”…”the Scottish game of golf is to be introduced to Woodhall Spa”…and many more.
As well as being living history this book makes a cracking yarn and as was said at this time, “It is available to be enjoyed by all classes of person.”
Woodhall Spa Past and Present
By Marjorie Sargeant
The book is priced at £9.00 and can be obtained from the Museum or selected local retailers. Alternatively, buy now online for £10.25 which includes UK post and packaging.
Description
This book is a “then and now” collection of wonderful photographs of the village of Woodhall Spa.
The early ones were taken on glass plates and developed in the dark room of Mr. Johnny Wield, who lived in The Bungalow, which was constructed of corrugated iron in 1884 and is now the acclaimed Cottage Museum. The modern day photographs were skilfully taken by Vice Chairman of the Museum, Rodger Pickavance.
Some places do not appear very different, while others are scarcely recognisable, or have disappeared. The famous Kinema of 1822 is instantly recognisable although now there is the addition of Kinema Too; the Post Office cannot be mistaken but now there are no white railway gates across the road in front of it; the pretty St. Andrew`s Church at the crossroads has gone, leaving only the graveyard; there are glorious photographs of Petwood from the past and today and there are several views of the Golf Course, which brings fame and visitors to the village now.
The photographs are listed alphabetically, with a useful map showing their position in the village.
A lively text, giving the background of the scenes depicted, runs throughout the book. This publication is a delight for anyone who enjoys seeing beautiful pictures of yesteryear and today.
